A “How to” Guide for Identifying Film Noir

You’re stroking your arms, trying to forget the cold. You’re grasping the back of the wooden chair in front of you. Your back against the wall. It feels rough. You’re seeing a shadow from the corner of your eyes - you quickly look left. Gone. You can only see the rain lashing against the willows. The branches are dancing around the stem, twisting, clasping.

The door squeaks. You slowly look back to the back door. Silence. Realising that the door is not closed completely, your eyes wander around the room. Closet, wall, nothing. Table, carpet, nothing. Prints, magazines – prints. Footprints. You follow the footsteps with your gaze. Through the door, past the closet, nothing - maybe on the carpet - ground. The footsteps are directed towards you, they lead towards the chair you are holding onto. You look left from the chair, right. Nothing. You can’t make out any more footprints except the ones next to the chair. Next to you! You feel someone stroking your arm, you’re trying to forget the cold. Nothing.

Everybody knows some crime movie or a detective movie with a setting and atmosphere like the above. And honestly, did we not all get goosebumps while reading this? Sounds pretty “noir” to us. But is every crime movie also a film noir? Is every urban fantasy one too? We do not think so. This is why we collected the most important characteristics if you want to identify a film noir. In the end you will also find an example where we applied some of the characteristics to the successful Swedish/ Danish TV-series “Bron” (“The Bridge“) which can be applied to some urban fantasy novels as well.

Be aware that this check list does not contain every single characteristic that a film noir can have. But if you want to identify a film noir, our list should lead you on a good path. A typical film noir contains at least some of the following characteristics:

Vi använde listan på serien „Bron“ och tog reda på att det är definitivt en film noir. Man kunde även konkretisera det som nordic noir för att serien utspelas i Sverige och Danmark. Redan i trailern ser man att allt är i gråa och gröna färger (åtminstone när det är ljus en gång) – bilar, kläder, vädret, staden... Stämningen är alltså ganska melankolisk och musiken på intron och dunklet stöttar det. Man ser ganska många sekvenser från staden om natten. Det är också mörk natt när serien börjar, vädret är inte bra och det förblir faktiskt sådär nästan hela tiden. Det gör stämningen inte mindre beklämmande. Saga Norén är en av huvudpersonerna och hon utreder i mordfallet. Man kan säga att hon är liksom en modern femme fatale. Allt som allt är serien ett väldigt bra exempel för film noir – därtill en ganska omtyckt serie i Europa.
