The Winner is…

During a conversation with my colleague, Dagmar Mißfeldt, we found an interesting connection between the courses we were planning to teach in winter semester 18/19. Seeing that Dagmar teaches Swedish and works as translator and I teach all things strange in English, we didn’t expect this. After considering various ideas, we decide to combine our courses in 3 joint sessions during the semester.

What was the idea that captured our interest and our teaching subjects? Film Noir. The Nordic Noir genre of Swedish crime stories is very popular in Germany. However many students aren’t aware of the ‘noir’ roots. Likewise not many students would associate Urban Fantasy with anything ‘noir’.

So after having several weeks of introduction and information in each class, the students met and had to discover the ‘noir’ in their topics and how and if they compared. They were free to choose between blogging, creating a poster or a self-drawn artistic impression. The only condition was that both languages have to work on it. On our last joint meeting all the students set up judging criteria and chose the best one. The winner: Tiia Kiva and Anneke Hoffmann.
